The Advantages of Music Therapy - Ajit Patel Wellness

Those who listen to music regularly will no doubt be aware of the effect that listening to it can have on your mood. A song that is special to you can often lift your spirits, put a smile on your face, and put a “spring in your step”. The impact of listening to music on mental-health and wellness has long been considered by some mental-health experts as an effective means of reducing the effects of depression, and recently a paper published by the UK-based, Journal of Advanced Nursing, has indicated that listening to music can also help to reduce chronic pain and its psychological side-effects.
In order to gauge the effectiveness of music-based therapy, researchers conducted a clinical trial with a sample of 60 people, dividing them into two groups who listened to music for an hour a day and one group who did not. The results concluded that those who had listened to music had significantly improved physical and mental-health symptoms, including improvements to a range of conditions, including: back-pain, arthritis and osteoarthritis. At the end of the trial, pain levels had declined by between 12% and 21% for those who listened to music, with reported increases of around 1-2% for those who had not. People in the music groups also revealed that their levels of depression had dropped by between 19-25%.
During the study, a varied type of music was applied to the groups, including: rock, pop, orchestral, jazz, electronic, ambient and even sounds from the natural world.
